Lamber sabão
This expression is used by people who are a little older, not by young people nowadays, however it’s important for you to know about it, because it is even used in Brazilian popular music.
See, people normally say “vá lamber sabão!”. If we try to translate it in a literal way we have something as “go lick soap”. But it makes no sense!
People use “vá lamber sabão” in Brazil meaning “mind your own business”.
- Deixa eu terminar meu trabalho! Vá lamber sabão!
- Let me finish my job and mind your own business.
Se não me falha a memória
This one is used very, very often here. I have already spoken of the expression “salvo engano” in this podcast. Both, salvo engano and se não me falha a memória have the same meaning: if I’m not mistaken or if memory serves me correctly.
The second one, se não me falha a memória, is used more frequently than salvo engano.
- Se não me falha a memória, você prometeu que iríamos sair para jantar hoje! (- If memory serves, you promised that we would go out to dinner today!)
Não vejo a hora
Eu não vejo a hora de lhe dizer / Aquilo tudo que decorei / Depois de um beijo que eu já sonhei / você vai sentir, mas, por favor/ Não leve a mal.
This is “Os Mutantes”. See, I started singing “Eu não vejo a hora de lhe dizer”.
If we try to translate it in a literal way, we have “I can’t see the time” or even “I don’t see the time”. However, we can best translate it as “I can’t wait for it”, “I’m looking forward to it”.
- Eu não vejo a hora de lhe dizer aquilo tudo que decorei. (I can’t wait to tell you what I memorized)
- Eu não vejo a hora de nos casarmos logo! (I can’t wait to get married soon!)
